New Tech Spy: Boeing 797 to take on Airbus with (1000 seat) giant Blended Wing plane

Quote: Boeing is preparing a 1000 passenger jet that could reshape the Air travel industry for the next 100 years. The radical Blended Wing design has been developed by Boeing in cooperation with the NASA Langley Research Center. The mammoth plane will have a wing span of 265 feet compared to the 747’s 211 feet, and is designed to fit within the newly created terminals used for the 555 seat Airbus A380, which is 262 feet wide.

Well, I wonder if it’s not a little late—seems like there might be a smaller market for super-large aircraft like this… Although I wonder how it would work for cargo…

OTOH, about time to see a major revolution in aircraft design – even if this particular design is way overdue anyway – I know there were similar basic designs back in the 1950’s, if not earlier. Still, I’m rather sure that the design has been modernized in every way anyway, so it’s not like I’m saying they’re using outdated design!

  1. the map guy said,

I would have to agree that it is a little late 1000 jet is just a bit much to me. Speed OTOH is the most realivent stat. Size is great, the speed of something that the ticket! Take the Us for example: Get it as big as possible to carry as much as possible to do all in as few moves as possible. Now don’t take this the wrong way but North America ( Mostly the U.S., but not to say Canada isn’t ” guilty ” of this too) But try to do as little work as possible. Hence the recycling of basic 50’s design features. Case and point I had the same idea about making a cargo jet!

Go back now and take Japan,China, etc… “The Orient Express” the name says it all…Express. Get it done quick. As you well know Japan has some of the fast trains in the world… not only that lots of them. their philosophy: Speed and confort…. and to be home for there ” after school specials. They have realitively small trains that go stupid fast and they have alot of them. Many trips at high speed will smaller loads, using electric power supply. The US makes huge jet with the abililty to carry mass quanities of good or passengers would be cumbersome and costly to run. Exspecially if they were to build many of them. The economic state of the airlines world wide is not the greatest.

Grated the comparision is not fair, but OTOH you get the picture. There is though something that would make this a much better idea for the future…. light ( or laser) prepulsion. Lightcraft Technologies has come up with quite the interesting concept that I think could be implament in some way. Then this might be useful. http://www.lightcrafttechnologies.com/gallery.html
