Eye Transmits to Brain at Ethernet Speed – Yahoo! News

10Mbs Ethernet, that is.

A rather interesting (if relatively short) read.

Warning! Hydrogen in water!

Monday, July 17th, 2006

Article: Water without hydrogen would warrant warnings (Louisville, KY Courier Journal)

Warning regarding hydrogen content in water...

Quote: David Karem, the Waterfront Development Corp.’s executive director, had the signs made to try to keep people out of the water after health officials raised concerns about bacteria in the fountains last year.

However, tests this year show the fountains meeting swimming pool standards.

Karem said he was counting on a lack of understanding about water’s chemical makeup, and he thought that suggesting a link to one of the world’s most dangerous weapons—the hydrogen bomb—might keep them from jumping in.

Yeah…

I suppose that will keep most away.

Personally, if faced with that sign, although I know the chemical makeup of water, I would probably personally assume that the sign designer was an idiot, and that there was some valid problem with the water…

OTOH, I would also keep out if it simply said “Keep out”........... So this might work for those that don’t catch on, who otherwise would ignore a simple rule to refrain otherwise…

Rather droll, I suppose.

Under Weather Attack…

Well, not really, but I thought this was amusing:

KEVX Radar courtesy of Accuweather

The white lines define the current (as of that radar image) projected stormtrack – this can change from image to image, and in fact, the next sweep was a bit different…

(We’re located nearly due south of the “PFN” airport icon – halfway between it and the east/west road to the south of it – at the center of the red rings. For a sense of scale, the red rings are 5, 10, and 25 miles)

Still, I’d rather write about this than the Middle East crisis for now…

The Benevolent Dictator

Thursday, July 13th, 2006

So over at Simutrans (or, more specifically, the Simutrans Forum), I managed to get the title of Benevolent Dictator… mostly because I’d explained it as what I wanted to be—at most a benevolent dictator, but more likely simply a facilitator…... At any rate, the title stuck…

An in-game memorial has been painted for me, much to my surprise and delight! Many contributors to the game have them; and to be honest, I’ve always been jealous, even though all I do is to provide the hosting—so I’m really not very worthy of one…

So, without more babbling from me, here is the beautiful thing:

Benevolent Dictator

Isn’t that cool? It’s GREAT.

You can check out the forum thread for more information…

Simutrans is a great game – if you haven’t already given it a try, check it out – it’s free, runs under Windows, Linux, and Macintosh (along with a few others, such as BSD). If you have trouble with it, post on the forum, or let me know (I’d prefer you post on the forum, though) – we’re all glad to help.

Texas Sherriff sends Hummer H2 to Germany to create fastest Police Hummer H2

Quote: Born from a military vehicle and the most prominent symbol of America’s global military dominance, the HUMMER does not require more testosterone, but hey, boys will be boys.

I’d love to find out which county this is… The trees make it look like North Central Texas, and if I’d have to guess, I’d guess somewhere within a county or two of the I-35 corridor between Dallas and Austin…

I really wonder about the local reaction to this sherriff sending off a Hummer to Germany to be customized… And really, couldn’t a better paint scheme been found? But I suppose sherriffs aren’t generally known for their artist skills, and… it does get the job done, I suppose.

I wouldn’t mind owning this, don’t get me wrong – but I think my take would have been a little different….
