A Surge In The ‘Burbs – Forbes.com

Quote: Texas boasts half of the top 10 counties with the greatest population gains in numeric terms. (Maricopa County, Ariz., which includes Phoenix, topped this list.) But in terms of growth—meaning percent increases in population—four Texas counties also made the list: Rockwall and Collin near Dallas, Williamson County near Austin and Fort Bend near Houston. Much of the growth in these metropolitan centers has to do with the prosperous high-tech industry. Dell (nasdaq: DELL - news – people ), for example, is located in Williamson County, and Ericsson (nasdaq: ERIC - news – people ), the North American subsidiary of the Swedish telecom company, is located in Plano, much of which is located in Collin County.

It’s a recurring theme – the DFW Metroplex is just growing and growing.

Larry James’ Urban Daily
A repository of ideas, resources, commentary and opinions concerning the issues facing low-income residents of the inner cities of the United States and how mainstream America largely forgets or, worse, ignores the day-to-day realities of urban life for the so-called “poor.” Written and edited by the President & CEO of Central Dallas Ministries. She is a great example of the success and accomplishment of one inner city child who grew up in a very poor, but loving family here in inner city Dallas, Texas.

Do I like the idea of undocumented immigrants being here? As a concept, no. I think there are many potential problems.

But these people are…. people. Real people.

Have some of them broken laws? Sure! So have citizens…

It’s stories like this that are the reason I’m uncomfortable with the “deport all them bastards!” attitudes I see from so many…

Texas Sherriff sends Hummer H2 to Germany to create fastest Police Hummer H2

Quote: Born from a military vehicle and the most prominent symbol of America’s global military dominance, the HUMMER does not require more testosterone, but hey, boys will be boys.

I’d love to find out which county this is… The trees make it look like North Central Texas, and if I’d have to guess, I’d guess somewhere within a county or two of the I-35 corridor between Dallas and Austin…

I really wonder about the local reaction to this sherriff sending off a Hummer to Germany to be customized… And really, couldn’t a better paint scheme been found? But I suppose sherriffs aren’t generally known for their artist skills, and… it does get the job done, I suppose.

I wouldn’t mind owning this, don’t get me wrong – but I think my take would have been a little different….

Quote: We have, for example, the case of Michael Crane, who came to my office to tell me the story of his encounter with a DART cop who, he says, yelled and motioned at him from across the street: “Come over here!” So Crane crosses the street as he has been ordered, and the cop whips out his ticket book.

Crane told me when he asked what he was being ticketed for, the DART cop informed him he had just crossed the street illegally.

Sucker!

Houston, we have a prob—- er, I mean… uh… Dallas, we have a problem.

Urban Legends Reference Pages: Crime (Garland Alert)

Quote: According to the investigations of NBC 5 in Dallas/Fort Worth, Garland police confirm there has not been such an attack. Yet the advisory, which has been jumping from inbox to inbox, has caused the police in that community some grief in that they’ve had to field a number of calls from those spooked by it. “This story has been over a week old and we are still getting calls today,” officer Joe Harn said.

Although NBC 5 did not supply the name of the e-mail’s author, they have been in contact with him to ascertain what caused him to write it. A friend had told him the tale, and he believed he was doing a good deed by spreading the story online. He has since learned otherwise, having discovered the story he took as gospel and passed to others was false. He now regrets writing the e-mail.

D’oh.

Prehistoric Lizard Called Historic Link – Yahoo! News

Quote: DALLAS - Amateur fossil hunter Van Turner felt certain he had found something important during his search of earth turned up by bulldozers making way for a new subdivision in Dallas County.

Sixteen years later, scientists finally confirmed that Turner had discovered the first well preserved early mosasaur found in North America — a prehistoric lizard that lived 92 million years ago that evolved into what some call the “T. Rex of the ocean.”

Woot! It’s called “Dallasaurus turneri”.

Okay, I don’t have much personal interest except for the location, note category, but still… WOOT! :D
